Authorities in Ukraine's Oblast have urged residents to avoid gas stations, warning that Russia is preparing targeted strikes on fuel infrastructure in the region.

Oleh Hryhorow, head of the Oblast military administration, said Russian forces plan to attack gas stations in Sumy and several other areas in the coming days. Authorities called on residents to temporarily avoid gas stations and not to linger near them without urgent need.

Gas station operators have been informed of the potential danger, Hryhorow said. Orders have been issued to tighten security measures. On July 4, a drone struck a gas station in the city of Sumy, causing a large fire and injuring three women.

The WOG gas station chain introduced special operations in several frontline regions starting July 1, including Sumy, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, Kherson, and parts of Poltava. Under these measures, stations are closed between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m., outdoor lighting is turned off at night, and fuel sales are halted during air raid alerts.

Russia has been systematically attacking Ukrainian gas stations for some time. According to aviation expert Bohdan Dolinze, the Kremlin aims to create fuel shortages in frontline regions and show the Russian population that Ukraine faces similar problems. This is a response to successful Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries and fuel depots, which have already caused gasoline shortages in Russia.
