Judge Timothy Mazzei called Heuermann a “vile and pathetic human being” and a “coward” during sentencing. When asked if he felt remorse, the convicted man replied “Yes.”
The court imposed a life sentence for each of the three first-degree murder charges. For four additional second-degree murder charges, the sentence is 25 years to life. Heuermann initially pleaded not guilty before confessing in April – although the indictment only charged him with seven murders.
The victims were women aged 20 to 34 who apparently worked as sex workers. Heuermann met some of them through ads on Craigslist. The murders went undetected for years; it was not until 2010 that the remains of four women were found at Gilgo Beach in New York. All victims had previously been reported missing.
The case of the “Long Island Serial Killer” has been featured in numerous true-crime formats. Relatives criticized the slow pace of the investigation – in their view, because the victims were sex workers.
