Röwekamp: No Fast Mandate for Bundeswehr in Strait of Hormuz

The chairman of the German defense committee, Thomas Röwekamp (CDU), does not expect a quick parliamentary decision on a Bundeswehr mission in the Strait of Hormuz. He told AFP that several conditions are still missing.

Röwekamp cited the unclear ceasefire, the lack of Iranian consent, and insufficient legal basis as obstacles. The mission is to be part of an international naval operation initiated by France and Britain. The goal is the permanent security of the Strait of Hormuz.

Germany has already deployed two naval vessels to the region and expressed its general readiness. The peaceful mission is primarily intended to clear mines that Iran laid during the conflict. According to Röwekamp, no concrete timeline for the mandate decision has been set yet.
