The government of Tatarstan justified the measure as a way to prevent artificial demand and ensure a stable situation. The region is Russia’s second-largest oil producer after the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug and ranks among the top five refining hubs.
At Tatneft gas stations, customers are limited to 20 liters of AI-92 or AI-95 gasoline and 40 liters of diesel per purchase. The restrictions were introduced on June 12, the day Ukrainian strikes hit the TANECO and TAIF-NK refineries in Nizhnekamsk. Tatneft imposed the same limits in Petersburg.
In Moscow, other chains have also restricted sales: Rosneft allows a maximum of 90 liters per tank or canister fill, while Lukoil caps purchases at 100 liters of gasoline or diesel per receipt. Earlier, fuel shortages had been reported in Belgorod, Ryazan, Krasnodar, and occupied Crimea.
