On the night into Wednesday, Russia attacked Ukraine with Iskander-K cruise missiles and 186 drones. By 08:30 on Wednesday, 21 October, the defence forces had, by their own account, shot down or suppressed 150 of the drones, including 63 of the 88 jet-powered models deployed. Ten combat drones were still in the air, and the combat operation was still ongoing at that point.

According to the Air Force, the attack began on the evening of 20 October at 18:00. The Iskander-K missiles were fired from the airspace of Rostov region; the Air Force did not state the number of missiles or the results of their interception. Besides Shahed-type drones, Russia also used S8000 Banderol/Dan-T, Gerbera and the decoy drones Parodija, according to the statement. They were launched from the direction of the Russian towns of Oryol, Kursk and Primorsko-Akhtarsk, from the temporarily occupied Donetsk, and from Hvardiiske and Chauda in occupied Crimea.

The Air Force reported hits at 27 locations and the fall of debris from intercepted targets at 13 other sites. In Kyiv, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko, a drone struck a 24-storey residential building in the Sviatoshyn district at the level of the 20th floor, killing two people. In the Desnianskyi district, parked cars caught fire after a drone crashed, and in the Solomianskyi district a transport infrastructure facility was hit and a fire was reported.

As the news outlet NV reports, citing the Air Force, two people were injured in a strike on the teaching building of Mykhailo Ostrohradskyi National University of Kremenchuk in Poltava region, including a 16-year-old child with a concussion and contusion who was taken to hospital.
