The attack was carried out, according to the Russian Defense Ministry, as retaliation for Ukrainian drone strikes on civilian targets in Russia. The Ukrainian Air Force had previously warned specifically about the Oreshnik on Telegram, describing it as a new medium-range missile with high destructive power. In addition to the Oreshnik, Russia said it also used Iskander, Kinzhal, and Zircon systems.

Kyiv’s military administrator Tymur Tkachenko reported a total of 40 damaged buildings, including high-rises and at least one school. At least one person was killed and around 20 were injured, he wrote on Telegram. Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents of the million-strong city to remain in shelters.

The Ukrainian military rejected Russian accusations of targeting civilian sites. It stated that it had targeted a Russian drone command unit. The Ukrainian air defense had previously reported a combined attack involving 600 drones, 90 missiles, and cruise missiles.
