According to Ukrainian broadcaster 24tv, Russia attacked the Ukrainian capital Kyiv with drones and missiles on the night of June 15. Along with widespread destruction in residential areas and civilian infrastructure, the grounds of the National Reserve Kyiv Pechersk Lavra (Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra) were significantly damaged. The monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that G7 leaders at their summit in France would discuss increasing pressure on Russia to end the war. “Last night there were heavy attacks on Ukraine, in which more civilians were killed and the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was severely damaged,” she said. No one wants peace more than the Ukrainian people, while Russia has once again shown it is only interested in violence and destruction.

EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos condemned the attack and noted that the timing was no coincidence. “On the day Ukraine begins the first round of negotiations with the EU, Moscow once again shows what it fears most: a democratic Ukraine firmly anchored in Europe,” Kos said.
