The attack struck the altar area of the Stefanivskyi side chapel of the Dormition Cathedral, the main temple of the monastery. The fire then spread to the roof, which burned over an area of about 800 square meters. The cathedral, built between 1073 and 1078, is the burial site of Kyivan princes and is considered one of the holiest centers of Orthodoxy.

Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat confirmed the impact of a Shahed drone. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated this information. The general director of the monastery complex, Maksym Ostapenko, said that emergency services of the State Emergency Service (DSNS) intervened in time and managed to save all the shrines inside the cathedral. During the night, museum staff and police began removing old icons from the building while the fire was still raging. The abbot of the monastery of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, Bishop Avramiy, also reported on the rescue operation involving the monastic brotherhood.
