A Russian drone struck an apartment building in the Romanian city of Galați overnight, injuring two people, the Guardian reports. The incident occurred just a few kilometers from the Ukrainian border and marks a serious breach on the territory of a NATO member state.

Romania’s president announced “proportionate measures” in response. Romanian Chief of Defence Staff Gheorghiță Vlad discussed the incident with NATO commanders. The alliance declared its readiness to defend every inch of allied territory.

NATO and EU react sharply

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said he had spoken with Romania’s Dan and assured him of the alliance’s “absolute solidarity.” “I reaffirmed that NATO is ready to defend every inch of allied territory. We will further increase our readiness to deter and defend against any threat – including drones,” Rutte said.

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the EU will keep increasing pressure on Russia. “Russia’s reckless behavior is a danger to us all. They continue to attack civilians and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine. And last night showed once again that the effects of their illegal war of aggression do not stop at the border,” Rutte added.

International reactions and background

Czech Pavel called for a “strong international response” to the drone attack. “The unprecedented overnight attack by a Russian drone on an apartment building in Galați, which injured two people, is completely unacceptable. We should not limit ourselves to joint condemnation. I therefore clearly support the call by Romania’s Dan for a strong international response. Russia must understand clearly that we will not tolerate such attacks,” Pavel said.

The incident underscores the need to ramp up surveillance and reaction forces on NATO’s eastern flank. Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine has repeatedly led to incidents on NATO territory, such as drones or missiles striking in Poland or Romania.
