In the early hours of May 24, two Russian missiles hit central Kyiv. One of them completely destroyed the Chornobyl Museum in the Podil district. The video of the impact was recorded by Yaroslav Yemelyanenko, head of the Association of Chornobyl Operators, who happened to be nearby.
Yemelyanenko reported that the missiles struck at 3:50 a.m., about a minute apart. Both flew over St. Sophia Cathedral and headed straight for the museum. “I could see from their trajectory that the Museum was on their path. But I hoped for the best,” he told 24tv. The missiles hit the building nonetheless: the roof caught fire, and the back wall of the third hall was torn off.
When Yemelyanenko arrived at the scene, firefighters were already extinguishing the flames. They fought the fire in the new exhibition, which had opened only a month earlier. Yemelyanenko called the museum’s director, Vitalina Martynovska, to inform her. The attack was aimed at destroying the historical memory of Ukrainians, the broadcaster reported.
