Schwesig Calls Federal Government’s Nursing Care Reform Plans Inhumane

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) has sharply criticized the federal government's planned nursing care reforms, calling them 'inhumane.' She announced she would not agree to the proposals by Nina Warken (CDU).

The SPD politician’s criticism targets several points of the expected draft bill from the Federal Ministry of Health. Schwesig particularly objected to possible cuts in pension entitlements for family caregivers and adjustments to pay for nursing staff. ‘This is not only unfair, I as a politician also find it inhumane,’ she said on the ntv program ‘Frühstart.’

Schwesig pointed out that over 80 percent of care is provided by family members, often women who give up their jobs entirely or partially for this. The current pension points for family caregivers are an important recognition. Reducing them would increase pressure on families and could lead to more people in need of care being admitted to nursing homes, which would financially burden municipalities.

Schwesig announced concrete opposition to the planned abolition of the income threshold for children of parents in need of care. The limit of 100,000 euros gross annual income, which Warken wants to remove, serves to protect relatives – a complete elimination would be ‘a mistake,’ she said. Schwesig called on the coalition to put together a comprehensive overall package instead of constantly presenting individual measures.

EuroPulse reported on June 13, 2026, about Schwesig’s renewed nomination as the SPD’s top candidate in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (europulse.today/manuela-schwesig-spitzenkandidatin-spd-mv/).
