Since Monday evening, severe thunderstorms have been moving across parts of Germany, causing damage and disrupting rail traffic. In Thuringia’s Weimarer Land, buildings and power lines were damaged, leading to power outages. In North Rhine-Westphalia, trees fell and rail services were disrupted.
Near Schwelm, a tree fell onto an overhead line, leaving an ICE train with more than 130 passengers stranded for over four hours. Deutsche Bahn set up a replacement bus service between Cologne and Aachen and advised passengers traveling between Cologne and Frankfurt to use alternative ICE connections.
In Mönchengladbach, two regional trains had to be evacuated due to damaged overhead lines, one of them carrying around 250 passengers. On Tuesday morning, a thunderstorm in Hamburg caused an accident with seven injuries when a tree fell on a minibus.
The German Weather Service warns of further severe weather in the southwest and of high temperatures up to 38 degrees Celsius.
