Steve Reed, the Housing Minister and close ally of Keir Starmer, stated in the media that the Labour Party should prioritize the interests of the country over party political considerations. This came as he admitted that Starmer is “unpopular.” Reed spoke to Sky News on Friday, emphasizing the need to unite and accelerate the changes that the British public desires.

When asked whether the party should consider replacing an unpopular Prime Minister, Reed responded, “Every one of the last four Prime Ministers has been the most unpopular we have ever had.” He urged Labour Party members to rally behind Starmer and focus on the challenges ahead.

The possibility of a leadership challenge seems inevitable, as Greater Manchester Andy Burnham may be considering a run. However, Reed pointed out that “there is no leadership challenge” and criticized the “internally focused nonsense” plaguing the party. He stated, “If people wanted to gather nominations, they are free to do so, but they would need to find enough Labour MPs willing to support them, and no one has done that.”

Reed emphasized that the party has had a difficult week and called for reflection over the weekend regarding the situation. He added that the Labour Party would not replicate the chaos observed among the Conservatives.
