For days, Frank-Walter Steinmeier has been traveling across Germany to honor volunteer work. The Federal President put on an old sweater, wears black rubber gloves, and is painting a wall on the sports field of the Herzebrocker SV in Herzebrock near Gütersloh. “I used to be very popular at moving parties,” he said according to Der Spiegel, dipping the paint roller into white paint. A young man in the red polo shirt of the local sports club called out: “He’s a natural talent.” His buddy added: “He hasn’t done this for the first time.”
The honorary day goes back to an initiative by Steinmeier and will be celebrated on Saturday, the Day of the Basic Law. For nearly two weeks, the Federal President has been traveling across the republic to lend a hand himself – whether painting, screwing, or sorting. The campaign aims to put civic engagement in the spotlight and encourage others to follow suit.
EuroPulse reported on May 23, 2026, about Steinmeier’s reform appeal to the coalition: “Steinmeier calls on coalition to reform” (https://europulse.today/steinmeier-reformappell-koalition-handeln/).
