Jan-Lennard Struff has reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time. The 36-year-old German advanced from the round of 16 after his opponent Hubert Hurkacz retired due to injury.

The match ended at 3-6, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-2), 7-5, 4-2 from the Warsteiner’s perspective after Hurkacz was forced to retire due to injury. Struff showed understanding for his opponent: ‘Only the best for Hubi,’ he said.

The match between two strong servers initially went in favour of the Pole, who won the first set clearly. Struff fought back but lost the second set in a tiebreak. In the third set, he secured victory in another tiebreak. As the fourth set entered its decisive phase, Hurkacz had to call the physio. He gritted his teeth but could not continue at 5-5 and left the court. After a brief return, the injury proved too severe – he lost the fourth set and finally retired in the fifth set after a break to 4-2.

Struff will face Italian defending champion Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals.
