Dominik Krause (Greens) called the breakthrough a “milestone” for Munich’s local transport. The subway is the backbone of public transport in the city, Krause said during his welcome speech in the tunnel shaft. The new Baumschule Laim station is only an intermediate goal: eventually, the U5 is to be extended all the way to Pasing.

The total cost of the project amounts to 1.3 billion euros. Completion is currently planned for 2036. City Building Commissioner Jeanne-Marie Ehbauer (Greens) thanked residents for their patience during the four-year construction period. With the breakthrough, the prerequisites for the next expansion steps have been created, Ehbauer said.

Three logistics openings now allow the transport of concrete, steel, and other materials into the tunnel. Further construction work will continue underground to reduce the burden on residents. At the same time, work on the culvert structures at the surface is ongoing to ensure groundwater flow around the tunnel structure.
