After the electoral debacle of his Labour Party, British Minister Keir Starmer is confronted with growing pressure. According to the BBC, Minister Shabana Mahmood has suggested that he create a timetable for his resignation. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper is also reported to have recommended Starmer's resignation, as stated by the Guardian.
Before a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Starmer will weigh his options. A cabinet member expressed to the Guardian that there are currently differing views within the cabinet regarding the future direction of the party and the country.
The situation is exacerbated by the loss of over 1,400 seats in the local elections in England. These elections are seen as a test of sentiment for the Labour Party, which fell to third place in Wales behind the independence party Plaid Cymru and Reform UK. In Scotland, Labour also fell short of expectations.
On Monday, more than 70 Labour MPs, including many backbenchers, publicly withdrew their support for Starmer. Additionally, four parliamentary assistants to his ministers announced their resignations and also called for his resignation.
