The initiative was triggered by a serious traffic accident in the capital Kyiv that caused a nationwide stir. The MVS proposes reviving the demerit point system abolished in 2020. Until now, speeding violations were only punished with fines, without repeated offenses leading to a driving ban.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko announced that the authorities are reviewing the so-called “accumulative points” system. Under this system, drivers would lose their licenses after a certain number of violations. He did not provide details on the number of points or the specific implementation.
