Ukraine rejects Russian drone attack claims over Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant

Ukraine's Southern Defense Forces have denied Russian accusations that a Ukrainian drone struck Power Unit No. 6 of the occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). The military presented technical evidence showing Ukraine lacks the heavy fiber-optic drones needed for such damage, calling the allegations a standard Russian information provocation.

Ukraine’s Southern Defense Forces officially denied on Saturday, May 30, that their troops had fired a drone at Power Unit No. 6 of the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). The military presented technical and physical evidence showing that Ukrainian forces do not possess the heavy fiber-optic guided drones required to cause such damage.

Ukrainian officials described the Russian accusations as a coordinated information provocation aimed at diverting international attention from Moscow’s tactical losses. The Ukrainian forces lack both drones with the necessary range and shaped-charge warheads of 5 to 6 kilograms to create the structural hole claimed by Russia.

Furthermore, Russian troops have erected a multi-layered smoke screen barrier around the entire plant, making it physically impossible for any external aircraft to fly through the barrier undetected. Ukrainian defense forces noted that the timing of the accusations follows an established propaganda pattern: whenever Russian forces suffer heavy losses at the front, Moscow fabricates loud, sensational claims against Ukraine.
