Ukraine risks losing a third of its freight car fleet

Ukrainian industry, transport businesses and sectoral associations are demanding an urgent revision of the state policy limiting the service life of freight cars. According to UNIAN, the current age-based write-off practice threatens Ukraine with the loss of roughly a third of its freight car fleet.

The demand comes from several business and industry groups, pointing to severe consequences for logistics and the overall economy. Without an adjustment of the regulations, thousands of wagons could be decommissioned even though they are still technically operational.

The current regulation imposes a rigid age limit, requiring wagons to be retired regardless of their actual condition. Critics argue that this leads to an unnecessary shortage of rolling stock and undermines the competitiveness of the Ukrainian economy.
