Ukraine launched its largest drone attack on Moscow in two years overnight Thursday, according to Russian authorities. The state-run Russian news agency TASS reported that 194 drones were intercepted over the capital in just eight hours. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the attacks were still ongoing in the morning.

Several drones struck the Moscow Oil Refinery in the southeastern district of Kapotnya, Sobyanin wrote on Telegram. It was the second attack on the facility within a week – it had already been hit on Tuesday. Geolocated video footage verified by CNN shows an explosion on the site, hurling the roof of a large tank into the air. Air traffic at all major Moscow airports was temporarily suspended.

Large-scale attack on multiple regions

The attack on Moscow was part of a large-scale offensive across wide areas of Russia. Russia’s Defense Ministry said it had intercepted a total of 555 Ukrainian drones, including over the Sea of Azov. Ukraine has stepped up its strikes on Russian energy infrastructure in recent weeks.

The attack came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was in Brussels for talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and the defense ministers of Britain and Germany.
