Ukraine will use its public warning systems to announce the daily national minute of silence at 9 a.m., Yuliia Svyrydenko announced on Friday, as reported by the Kyiv Post. The sirens will also be activated during the annual ‘Light a Candle’ campaign on the fourth Saturday of November, commemorating victims of the Holodomor famine of 1932-33.
‘We are shaping a new culture of remembrance,’ Svyrydenko said. ‘The daily minute of silence is an important part of that and a sign of our respect for fallen defenders and civilians.’ Ukraine introduced the national minute of silence in 2022 after Russia’s full-scale invasion to honor killed soldiers and civilians. On February 11, parliament passed a law formally establishing the minute of silence; President Volodymyr Zelensky signed it in March.
