Ukrainian forces in the south are employing a new tactic: specialized drone units are targeting Russian logistics with so-called ‘middle strikes.’ The campaign, ongoing since April, aims to cut off the occupiers’ fuel and supply routes and weaken their combat capability.
According to the Kyiv Post, which analyzed combat footage, unit statements, and open-source reports, Ukrainian drones destroyed hundreds of fuel trucks in June alone. The attacks focus on Russian-occupied areas in Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and Crimea.
An estimated 5,000 to 8,000 Ukrainian drone pilots and technicians are involved in the campaign. They operate against supply lines that support more than 250,000 Russian soldiers in the occupied territories. Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces (USF) launched the operation with the dual goal of weakening Russian frontline supplies and cutting the logistics link to occupied Crimea.
The Kyiv Post published the analysis as the fourth and final part of a series on Ukraine’s air campaign against Russian military logistics in the middle front area. Previous parts covered the drones used, tactics, and damage inflicted so far.
