The Ukrainian army has launched a drone attack on the city of Nizhnekamsk in Russia's Tatarstan. According to Russian authorities, twelve people were killed and 39 others injured. In June, Ukraine had already hit the facility.
Russia said it had shot down a total of 456 Ukrainian drones, without specifying how many reached their targets. Russian investigators opened a criminal case on charges of a terrorist attack, as residential areas had also been hit and a child was among the dead. The head of the Tatarstan region, Rustam Minnikhanov, ordered a period of mourning, as the mayor of Nizhnekamsk, Radmir Belyaev, announced on Telegram.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his nightly video address on Sunday that the continued strikes on oil refineries were directly linked to the goal of increasing pressure on Moscow. “The only reason this is still going on is Russia’s refusal to end this war,” Zelenskyy said. According to news agencies, this is one of the deadliest attacks by Kyiv since the start of Russia’s war of aggression in 2022.
The Russian central bank has called on lenders to support companies affected by Ukrainian attacks on logistics centers and warehouses. Affected firms should be given the opportunity to restructure their loans, the regulator said in a letter published on Monday. Since July 18, at least 20 warehouses of the Russian online retailer Wildberries have been attacked by Ukraine.
