In the night to Sunday, 9 August, Russian troops attacked the city of Odesa with missiles and drones. Residential buildings in several districts were destroyed, according to the State Emergency Service (DSNS). Eight people were wounded, three of them taken to hospital. Parked cars also caught fire, but the flames were extinguished.
In the morning, a Russian drone hit a high-rise building in the Saltivka district of Kharkiv. Two people died, 21 were wounded, including a five-year-old boy. Oleh Syniehubov, governor of Kharkiv region, said rescuers had pulled seven people from the upper floors. After the first strike, further attacks hit neighbouring buildings and a park.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that 179 Russian targets – drones and missiles – were directed at Ukraine overnight, with the focus on Odesa. The Ukrainian army said it had intercepted 174 drones. The Russian strikes damaged the road from Odesa to the Moldovan border, and traffic on the Odesa-Reni highway is restricted. Border crossings to Moldova are currently unreachable from Odesa.
