Ukrainian medium-range drones are opening a new phase of the war, Business Insider reports. The unmanned systems are effectively destroying Russian logistics and command posts, reaching targets that were previously only possible with American HIMARS rocket launchers.
One example of the new drones’ effectiveness is an attack on a house in the Zaporizhzhia sector. According to Ukrainian military sources, Russian FPV drone operators were staying there. The operator of the Ukrainian National Guard unit “Taifun” with the call sign Spring said the hit was her first successful use of a medium-range drone. “It was a house where Russian FPV drone pilots lived,” she explained. The winged drone hit the roof, and the upper floor was destroyed by the explosion.
At the beginning of the full-scale war, HIMARS systems allowed Ukraine to destroy Russian ammunition depots, headquarters, and logistics hubs far behind the front line. However, Russia adapted to this threat. Mykola Bielieskov, senior analyst at the Come Back Alive foundation, emphasized that the most effective phase of the American systems was the first year of the war.
