The Language Lab in Kyiv has transformed into a hub for Ukrainian language instruction since the onset of Russia’s war against Ukraine. Ksenia Golubytska, the founder of the school, has noticed a significant increase in inquiries from international students eager to learn Ukrainian. Before the invasion, many foreigners in Kyiv opted to learn Russian, viewing it as more practical. However, this changed dramatically after the attack.

“Right after the full-scale invasion began, we received almost exclusively requests for Ukrainian,” Golubytska explains. “It felt like a natural and meaningful shift. Many of our students said they wanted to show respect and solidarity with Ukrainians.” This trend has also influenced the reactions of locals, who have become more open and welcoming.

Golubytska, who previously worked as an English teacher in Donetsk, describes founding her school as an unexpected challenge. “I thought I could work less, but after starting Language Lab, I had to work much more,” she says. The school not only offers online courses but also stands as a symbol of cultural resilience amid the war.

The demand for Ukrainian courses reflects not only an interest in the language but also a strong sense of solidarity with Ukraine. Students come from various parts of the world, demonstrating that Ukrainian culture and identity hold great significance during these challenging times.
