The CDU/CSU and SPD parliamentary groups have introduced a bill to cancel this year’s pay raise for members of the Bundestag. According to Welt, the groups want to send a signal of austerity to the public during financially and economically difficult times. The increase would have given each member around 500 euros more per year.

The bill does not go far enough for opposition groups such as the AfD and the Left Party. They are calling for more extensive cuts to parliamentarians’ salaries. The specific demands of the opposition parties are not known from the current draft.
