Germany’s national weather service has forecast temperatures of up to 35 degrees Celsius in Berlin on Friday. As Tagesspiegel reports, the capital has no fixed temperature threshold for heat-related school closures. Compulsory school attendance remains in effect, but lessons are to be adapted to weather conditions.
School principals can decide to shorten lessons or cancel individual periods in case of “extreme heat.” This is common from around 32 degrees. A spokesperson for the education authority stressed that a complete cancellation of classes is only possible in exceptional cases when shortening is not feasible.
For parents, last-minute childcare can become a challenge. Berlin-based labor law attorney Martin Bechert makes it clear: “Heat-related school closure does not automatically mean time off for parents.”
