Russia had previously threatened new “systemic” strikes on decision-making centers in Kyiv and called on foreign citizens to leave the capital. Against this backdrop, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas spoke on May 28 at an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Cyprus.
“From what we heard from Ukraine yesterday, all embassies remain except one. All Europeans stayed, the US left,” Kallas said. She also stressed that allies must remain united in supporting Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry responded promptly. Spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi clarified: “The information about the US embassy’s departure does not correspond to the truth.” Presidential communications adviser Dmytro Lytvyn called Kallas’s statement “strange” and warned against interpreting the EU chief diplomat’s words toward the US.
