The undisputed Oleksandr Usyk met with Ukrainian war veterans who now work for the energy company DTEK ahead of his fight on May 23 in Cairo. The men repair the power grid, which is repeatedly damaged by Russian missile and drone attacks. Usyk called them ‘champions of light,’ drawing international attention to Ukraine’s daily struggle to maintain electricity supply.
The veterans traveled to Cairo specifically to support Usyk before the fight. The connection between the boxer and the energy workers has existed for years: Usyk has visited DTEK thermal power plants and met repair teams across the country. The energy workers risk their lives daily to restore power after Russian terror attacks.
