In her video message, Wagenknecht said she had already made Höcke a “very simple offer” days ago: “You and me live, neutral moderator, no prepared speeches.” She urged the AfD politician to discuss her proposal for a non-partisan minister-president, which he “now also likes.” Thuringia needs “a new head of government who is credible and ends the firewall madness.”
With a jab at Höcke’s masculine posturing, Wagenknecht closed her message: “Especially you, who place so much value on masculinity, surely don’t want to come across as a coward.” The move comes amid the shaky governing coalition of CDU, SPD, and BSW under Mario Voigt (CDU), whose loss of his doctorate has prompted the BSW federal leadership to demand his resignation and an end to the coalition.
Höcke had previously offered to have Wagenknecht elected minister-president with AfD votes in order to tear down the firewall. Wagenknecht dismissed the offer as “neither honest nor serious.” Since the 2024 state election, the CDU has governed without an absolute majority and works with the Left in the state parliament. The AfD, classified by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution as certainly right-wing extremist, is the strongest parliamentary group.
