Wes Streeting, former Health Minister, has issued a clear challenge to Keir Starmer in his first public speech since his resignation. He called for a “new special relationship” between the UK and the European Union, signaling a desire for the country to rejoin the trading bloc in the future. “We need a proper competition with the best candidates on the field, and I will run,” Streeting stated at the Progress Conference.
Streeting took the opportunity to criticize Starmer for his “heavy-handed” leadership, which he believes has stifled creative political ideas within the Cabinet. He expressed concern about the effectiveness of the Labour government in its first two years, emphasizing that the party came into government “underprepared” and lacks clarity in vision and direction.
Streeting was particularly harsh regarding Starmer’s proposed cuts to winter aid, which are seen as one of the government’s most unpopular measures. He labeled this a “disaster” and called for a genuine debate about the future direction of the Labour Party, which has not occurred since the Corbyn era.
Streeting, who is expected to launch a leadership challenge in the coming weeks, stressed the need for a “battle of ideas” in the upcoming leadership contest. This could significantly influence the direction of the Labour Party.
