Wes Streeting announced his resignation as Health Minister on Tuesday, allowing the Labour Party the opportunity to conduct a leadership contest with the best candidates. In his resignation letter, he emphasized that he does not have the necessary support of 80 MPs to force a contest.

Streeting criticized the leadership of Keir Starmer, making it clear that the Labour Party must engage in a debate about its future based on ideas rather than personal rivalries. He stated, “It is now clear that you will not lead the Labour Party into the next general election.”

The resignation follows recent electoral defeats for the Labour Party in England, Scotland, and Wales, which Streeting attributed to the unpopularity of the government. He pointed out that many good Labour members have lost their positions through no fault of their own.

Streeting hopes that Andy Burnham will be given the opportunity to stand as a candidate and hinted that he himself might be interested in a future contest. He expressed gratitude for the chance to serve in the Cabinet and regretted leaving the government in this manner.
