Brandenburg's Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) has called for a reform of the statutory pension system that includes all professional groups.

Woidke stressed the need for a broad discussion on the long-term security of the statutory pension. “We need a broad debate on how to secure the statutory pension in the long term,” he said. He considers it particularly important that civil servants are also included in the considerations to find a fair solution.

The commission proposes that self-employed individuals and politicians should also be integrated into the statutory pension system in the future. Civil servants, however, are to remain exempt from this regulation, while an increase in the retirement age is being considered for them. The commission envisions an employment-based insurance that includes not only employees but also self-employed individuals and members of parliament.

Woidke pointed out that the impact of the proposals on pensioners in the eastern German states must be carefully examined. “Many employment biographies differ from those in the west,” the minister president said. The statutory pension plays a crucial role in these regions, which must be taken into account in future decisions.

Additionally, the commission proposes linking the statutory retirement age to life expectancy over the coming decades and restricting early retirement. Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) has already announced that he will implement the proposals swiftly.
