Before the knockout match between Mexico and Ecuador in Mexico City, the situation escalated at the fan fest in northern Monterrey. According to broadcaster Telediario, several people were injured in the scuffles. Authorities initially did not provide official figures.
The venue at Parque Fundidora had reached its maximum capacity of around 100,000 people, prompting the closure of entrances. The newspaper “El Norte” reported that fans then tried to break down gates, climb over fences, and topple them. In Mexico City, hundreds of thousands also gathered on the Zócalo square and the grand Paseo de la Reforma avenue to watch the game. There, too, fans attempted to storm the fan fest in the historic center.
In Guadalajara, police arrested several fans after riots, as broadcaster “Milenio” reported. The World Cup euphoria in Mexico is thus partially turning into chaos.
