The survey by the Forschungsgruppe Wahlen shows that the personnel changes in the cabinet are met with approval but hardly inspire hope for improvement. 55 percent of respondents welcome the new faces in the government, while 31 percent reject the reshuffle. Support comes from all party supporter groups except the AfD.
Dissatisfaction with the work of the government and the chancellor remains high: 68 percent rate the federal government’s work as rather poor, and 70 percent say the same about Chancellor Merz. Only among Union supporters do the government and chancellor receive majority support.
In the ZEIT election trend, which combines all available polls on the federal election, the AfD would get 28 percent (plus one), the Union 23 percent, SPD and Left each 12 percent, Greens 13 percent, and FDP 4 percent. Thus, black-red would still lack a majority.
The interviews for the Politbarometer were conducted from July 28 to 30, 2026, with 1,405 randomly selected eligible voters by phone and online. The statistical margin of error is two to three percentage points.
