Zelensky: Over 60 Percent of Russians Want End of War

More than 60 percent of Russians want an end to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday at the Reuters Next summit. Growing losses and a lack of battlefield success are shifting public opinion in Russia, he argued.

Zelensky spoke via video link at the Reuters Next summit and stressed that pressure on the Kremlin must be increased to force Moscow into negotiations. He pointed to Russia’s high military losses and its struggling economy as factors changing the attitudes of the Russian population.

“The good news is that Putin must end this war,” Zelensky said. He said he had unanimous support from all EU heads of state and government for this position. They agree that Russia is not winning but losing many people and should reach an agreement as soon as possible.

In Zelensky’s assessment, the initiative in the war no longer lies with Moscow. Growing losses are beginning to change the mood in Russia, even though members of Putin’s inner circle continue to advocate for another large-scale mobilization.
