An oil refinery in the Russian city of Syzran in Oblast was struck on May 21. According to the Ukrainian news portal 24tv, a series of explosions occurred at the site, followed by a fire. Thick black smoke rose over the industrial zone.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the attack and described it as part of systematic efforts to destroy Russian oil infrastructure, which fuels the aggressor state’s military machine, Zelenskyy said. The Syzran refinery is considered strategically important for Russia’s fuel supply.
Witnesses posted videos and photos on social media showing the smoke plume. Local residents reported that one of the processing units caught fire after the explosions.
