The flight is scheduled for the evening of June 15 from Chișinău to Geneva. Geneva is the nearest major airport to Évian on Lake Geneva, where the G7 summit will take place. This is already the second time in a short period that the Ukrainian president has departed for an overseas trip from Moldova instead of the Polish city of Rzeszów.
For three years, Rzeszów was the base airport for Zelenskyy’s foreign trips. The Ukrainian government plane was also frequently stationed in Krakow between missions, where the technical infrastructure is better. On June 15, the plane arrived in Chișinău from Krakow before continuing to Geneva in the evening.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry denied that the change of departure airport had a political background. Speculation had arisen after Zelenskyy first flew from Chișinău to Britain two weeks ago – coinciding with a diplomatic rift between Kyiv and Warsaw over the naming of a Ukrainian military unit after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA).
