Alexander Zverev is preparing for the grass-court classic in the London heat. At a press conference before his opening match, a journalist confronted him with the London saying that you wait forever for a bus and then two come at once. Zverev replied diplomatically: “Let’s see, I don’t know. I certainly hope that saying comes true for me. But Wimbledon has always been the Grand Slam tournament where I’ve had the most difficulties.”
The world number three won his first Grand Slam title three weeks ago at the French Open. In nine appearances at Wimbledon, he has reached the round of 16 three times; last year he was eliminated in the first round. After that tournament, he revealed mental problems – a year later, the mood is completely different. “Personally, I have a different feeling this year. I think I’ve prepared well,” Zverev said.
His improved game could help him on the court: compared to last year, he stands up to a meter closer to the baseline, plays his forehand more aggressively, and has improved his net game. At the warm-up tournament in Halle, he lost in the semifinals to Taylor Fritz after complaining about problems with his diabetes monitor. In London, he gave the all-clear: apart from the usual grass and pollen allergy, he feels fine.
