Alexander Zverev advanced at the Masters by overcoming Daniel Altmaier. Zverev’s first appearance in the Italian capital proved hard-fought, with the 27-year-old allowing his countryman several chances, the Tagesspiegel reports.

The all-German clash ended in a victory for third-seeded Zverev. The exact set scores were not immediately disclosed. Altmaier, who had entered the main draw through qualifying, pushed the favorite for long stretches.

According to Sportschau, Zverev ultimately won the match convincingly. The Tokyo Olympic champion said he felt relieved after securing a place in the next round. Despite the loss, Altmaier left a positive impression.

The Masters is one of the most important clay-court tournaments ahead of the French Open. Zverev is using the event to prepare for the second Grand Slam of the year; he was eliminated in the round of 16 in Rome last year.
