Deutsche Bahn (DB) and the US technology company Google have announced a partnership that allows passengers to purchase tickets for regional trains and S-Bahn services directly through Google Maps. This feature is implemented through a new purchase button in the mapping application, making it easier for users to access tickets.
This functionality already exists for long-distance trains and is now being introduced for regional transport. Users who click on the purchase button will be redirected to the DB website to buy their tickets. This innovation is generally applicable nationwide; however, individual transport associations may have their own agreements with Google regarding the visibility of the button.
Although no money is exchanged as part of the partnership, Google benefits from real-time data from the railway. This data allows Google Maps to provide more accurate predictions about train arrival times. Tim Rang, a manager at Google, spoke positively about the collaboration: "Direct access to accurate real-time data on Google Maps makes using buses and trains significantly more convenient, thereby strengthening public transport in Germany."
Harmen van Zijderveld, head of DB Regio, emphasized that using Google Maps simplifies ticket purchasing. "As in the real world, the simpler, the better in the digital space," said van Zijderveld.
