The German logistics group Deutsche Post has officially changed its name to DHL AG, reflecting its growing international focus.

The resolution passed by the annual general meeting in May has now been implemented: 99.95 percent of shareholders voted in favor of the renaming. The shares are now listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange under DHL AG. The company cites its increasing internationalization as the reason – around 80 percent of its revenue is generated abroad.

The previous name will not disappear entirely, however. The group has bundled its domestic mail and parcel business into a newly founded subsidiary that will continue to operate under the name Deutsche Post AG. This subsidiary is wholly owned by DHL AG. The costs of the switch amount to around 37 million euros, according to the company.

For consumers, nothing changes: the design, logo, and name of post offices and postal agencies remain the same, as do the yellow letterboxes and advertising. Parcel shipping has already been running under the DHL brand for years.

Deutsche Post AG is a successor to the federal postal service, which was gradually privatized after 1990. In 2002, the company acquired the US logistics firm DHL – a move widely regarded as one of the most forward-looking decisions in German economic history. Today, the group employs around 534,000 full-time staff worldwide, a third of them in Germany.
