The European Commission presented a proposal on Tuesday aimed at significantly simplifying the booking of train tickets for cross-border travel within the EU. Travelers will soon be able to purchase tickets for various rail companies with just one booking process. Apostolos Tzitzikostas, Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, stated: “Freedom of movement is one of Europe’s greatest achievements. Today, we take a step further: traveling across all 27 member states will be easier, more digital, and better tailored to the needs of passengers.”

The newly introduced passenger package not only offers simplified booking but also strengthens passenger rights. Those who miss their connections will be protected, even if the trains are operated by different companies. Travelers will have the right to a free rerouting to their final destination and will receive compensation for the entire delay. Additionally, they are entitled to assistance, such as meals or, if necessary, accommodation in case an overnight stay is required.

Another important aspect of the proposal is the obligation for online ticket platforms with a market share of over 50 percent to display all available offers during booking, including those from competitors. This aims to enhance transparency and provide better comparison options.

The EU Commission aims with this package to promote mobility within Europe and provide travelers with a seamless experience. The new regulations could come into effect in the near future to meet the needs of passengers.
