A report from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) indicates that the EU could source two-thirds of its liquefied gas needs from the United States by 2026. This shift occurs against the backdrop of a gradual move away from Russian gas, increasing reliance on a single supplier.

In 2022, the EU already imported 58 percent of its liquefied gas needs from the US. The rising imports are a response to geopolitical tensions and uncertainties in the energy market, particularly related to the war in Ukraine.

Additionally, IEEFA analysts warned that this trend could lead to a new energy dependency. The EU also faces challenges from high oil and gas prices, exacerbated by the conflict in Iran.

To reduce reliance on unstable global energy markets, IEEFA recommends that the EU invest more in renewable energy and heat pumps.
