Tensions between Mexico and the United States have reached a new high after Washington accused Mexican officials of being linked to drug traffickers for years. These allegations come at a time when Mexico is under intense pressure to combat drug cartels, significantly straining relations between the two countries.

Claudia Sheinbaum, the mayor of Mexico City, addressed the allegations on Wednesday, emphasizing, “We want a good relationship with the US government. What are our limits? The protection of sovereignty and respect for the Mexican people and their dignity.” Her statements follow explosive testimony from Terry Cole, the director of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), before the US Senate.

Cole stated, “There is no doubt that drug traffickers and high-ranking government officials in Mexico have been collaborating for years. They are equally responsible for the death and destruction of record numbers of Americans.” These remarks highlight the urgency with which the US government is demanding action from Mexico to combat drug trafficking.

The situation has further escalated in recent weeks, as Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to deploy troops to Mexico. This forces Sheinbaum to navigate a difficult balancing act between her party’s expectations and the demands of the increasingly aggressive White House.

Jorge Castañeda, a former Mexican foreign minister, described the current situation as the most strained since at least the 1980s. “We are in a moment like we have never experienced, at least not in my memory,” he said.

In the past twelve months, the Mexican government has extradited nearly 100 cartel members to US authorities, underscoring its efforts to combat drug trafficking.
