Ukrainian drones reveal Russia’s air defense problem

Ukrainian drone attacks have expanded into Russian territory, bypassing Russian air defenses. According to Tagesspiegel, the attacks reveal a geographic problem that Putin cannot solve.

Russia’s war against Ukraine is now also taking place on its own soil: Ukrainian combat drones travel hundreds of kilometers without being stopped by Russian air defenses. The number has grown to several hundred per attack wave, Tagesspiegel reports, citing military experts. The drones target military airfields, weapons manufacturers, and fossil fuel facilities—everything that contributes to the Russian invasion.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the goal is to “send the war of aggression back home.” According to Reuters, almost all major oil refineries in central Russia now produce less fuel or none at all. The Ukrainian army has expanded its capabilities: it knows the weak points of Russian air defense and uses improved medium-range drones, military expert Gustav Gressel told Tagesspiegel.

On the Russian side, structural problems are emerging. Lieutenant Colonel and military analyst Andreas Rapp from the Bundeswehr’s think tank (GIDS) in Hamburg speaks of poorly coordinated air defense and scarce ammunition. He sees “no signs that Russia has established a network of coordinated mobile fire teams, interceptor drones, and aircraft for drone defense”—unlike Ukraine.
