The law passed by the black-red coalition aims to turn pharmacies into central hubs for preventive healthcare. In addition to flu and COVID-19 vaccinations, all inactivated vaccines such as tetanus or TBE can be administered. Rapid tests for specific pathogens will also be possible, similar to those during the pandemic.
Patients with chronic conditions will be able to obtain prescription medications without needing a new prescription each time. Pharmacies may also dispense certain drugs for acute, uncomplicated illnesses without a doctor’s prescription. After medical training, pharmacists can perform blood draws from a vein for diagnostic purposes – but only for patients aged 18 and older.
Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU) said pharmacies should be strengthened as a “solid pillar for low-threshold and comprehensive healthcare for the people.” Tasks need to be distributed among more shoulders. The reform is intended to secure care especially in rural areas. CDU, CSU, and SPD voted in favor, while the Greens and AfD opposed, and the Left Party abstained. The Bundesrat still needs to approve.
