As reported by the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung, the 62-year-old Albig said that cooperation does not mean sharing the ideological mindset of right-wing populists. Rather, it is about winning back lost voters: “We have understood – come back home.”
According to Albig, it is conceivable that SPD politicians like Manuela Schwesig in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania could say after the election: “I will seek my majorities in the state parliament depending on the issue.” He criticized that multi-party alliances with the CDU, Left Party, Greens, or BSW burden the functionality of democracy and only leave frustrated voters behind.
Former Olaf Scholz clearly contradicted Albig’s proposal. In a video distributed on his social media channels, the SPD politician said: “With the AfD, no state can be made – certainly not a democratic state in the sense of our Basic Law.” He called it “disturbing” when the so-called firewall against the AfD is criticized or when demands are made for the CDU and CSU to form a minority government dependent on AfD support.
